Titel:
"How peatlands protect the Climate – and what happens when they burn"
Description:
In December 2024, we visited the Forsinard Flows National Nature Reserve in northern Scotland – part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site The Flow Country, Europe’s largest blanket bog and one of the UK’s most important carbon sinks. This unique landscape stores vast amounts of carbon and plays a crucial role in climate regulation. But peatlands are fragile: drainage, climate change, and wildfire can release stored carbon back into the atmosphere. In this study, we investigate the impact of a large wildfire in 2019 on soil processes, nitrogen dynamics, and carbon changes of burnt and unburnt pairs of near natural and restored sites – and what it means for future climate scenarios.
In the series “My paper in 140s”, scientists from the Collaborative Research Center 1502 'DETECT' present syntheses of their project work that have been published in peer-reviewed papers.
